One day in August 2016 I was working in the front garden and came across a large garden spider among the iris leaves. The colours of yellow and brown and the pattern on the big fat body caught my eye and I had to do some research to find out the type of spider.

One of our most favourite places to visit when in British Columbia is the Esquimalt Lagoon. This salt water lagoon by the Royal Roads University is a bird sanctuary for migrating birds and also a wildlife refuge area.

Printable Green Pea Soup Recipe
Green Pea Soup The recipe was in The Essential Vegetarian Cookbook. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups of green split peas 1 medium onion, 1 medium carrot, 2 tbsp grated ginger, 1 stalk celery, 1 tbsp ground cumin, 1 tbsp ground coriander, 5 cups vegetable stock, 2 cups of frozen peas. Soak the split peas in cold water for 2 hours, then drain and rinse well. Lightly pan fry the onion, celery and carrot in a little bit of olive oil for about 3 minutes until soft but not brown. Stir in the cumin, coriander and ginger and cook about another minute.

How to Make Shell Candles
Who can resist picking up shells while at the beach? I know I can’t and have accumulated quite a lot over the years of collecting. Then comes the question of what to do with them? On our numerous visits to British Columbia I’ve been a shell collector while walking along the gorgeous beaches. The shells in the top left photo didn’t come from BC but were either from garage sales or from gifts from friends from their vacations. The fifth book in the Sgt. Windlfower mystery series by Mike Martin, was waiting for me when we got back from British Columbia at the end of September. This well written series is set in Newfoundland, Canada and Windflower is a sergeant with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). He is a Cree from Alberta who is stationed in Grand Bank, Newfoundland. On a gorgeous day in September we visited Canada’s oldest Chinatown in Victoria, British Columbia. Only the Chinatown in San Francisco is older. The grand entrance way, Gate of Harmonious Interest, over the street is spectacular to see.
