Cardinals

The Northern Cardinals are one of the most admired birds by birdwatchers. In my part of Canada they are year round residents.

The male is a bright red with a pointed crest on the top of his head. The female is mostly buff brown in color with some red on her head, wings, and tail. Both birds small black masks on their faces that surround the bill and eyes. Both birds are about 20 to 22 cm. long.

Cardinals are our favourite bird to watch in the garden at any time of the year. The vibrant colour of the male cardinal is striking against the white snow in winter. We have at least 3 pairs of cardinals that visit the garden on a daily basis. Usually they are ground feeders, eating all the black oil seed that spills out from the feeders.

This cardinal was having a bad hair day on a windy weekend, but it didn't stop him from snacking on the black oil seed on the ground under the feeder.
