Robins

When the American robin arrives spring isn't far behind.  Robins return to our garden towards the end of February or the beginning of March and the nesting season begins.  I've read that is usually the male robins that return first to scope out the territory and find suitable nesting grounds.

The American robin was given its name by early settlers as it reminded them of the robins from the old country.  But actually the American robin belongs to the thrush family and not the robin family.  An adult measures about 25 cm. long.

Nests are made of grasses, twigs, and whatever takes their fancy.  It is then shaped and molded with mud and lined with soft grasses or other material.  The robin can make up to 180 trips per day in building the nest.

This persistent robing made one of its nests on our back light.  I guess it liked the fact that heat and hydro was included in the cheep rent.

Robins are one of the first birds to start singing in the morning and one of the last to sing at night. The male bird is more vocal than the female bird.

Their main diet is berries but they also eat bugs and worms.
