The Yummy BBQ Season

Categories: Recipes and Vegetables.

BBQ season is wonderful.  There are so many foods to cook outdoors.  We look forward to bbq cooking all winter.  I know some people can bbq all year round but we only do it from spring to fall.  It just gets too cold and windy and snowy and it takes ages for the bbq to reach cooking temperature. One of our favourites is to make foil packets … of potatoes, onions, mushroom, and veggies. New potatoes that are scrubbed and sliced with a dollop of butter and then wrapped in foil come out crispy and delicious. I’m sure you all

Muffins for the Birds

Categories: Birds and Recipes.

There has been lots of activity at the suet feeder lately.  The last time I made the all season suet I used my muffin tins to form the shapes instead of rolling it around in my hands to make small balls.   I also added some black oil sunflower seeds.  They turned out great.  Once the muffin tins were filled I popped them into the freezer for awhile.  When they were frozen into shape they popped out easily to be stored in a zip lock bag.  Delicious bird muffins. When the suet basket needs filling, I just take out 3

Chilly for Chili

Categories: Recipes.

Today I made a pot of chili, which doesn’t really qualify for a Souper Sunday category but that’s okay. Today is a dull and overcast day with rain coming down.  The temperatures are about 7 Celsius but the rain just makes it feel damp, so some chili to combat the chilly day is called for. Chili is a great meal on a cold day.  I use about half a kilo (1 pound) of extra lean ground beef, a large can of diced tomatoes, a large can of red kidney beans, and a small can of tomato paste,  chili seasoning, sweet onion and

Snickerdoodles

Categories: Recipes.

It was time to do some baking for a craft and bake sale at our granddaughter’s preschool.   I chose to make some snickerdoodles as it is a plain and simple recipe and most of the ingredients are basic ones that will be found in the cupboard.     These cookies don’t have anything that people might be allergic too, like nuts or peanut butter, and best of all – no chocolate calories. Enjoy.  Ingredients: 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 egg, 1/2 tsp vanilla 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp cream of tartar 1/4 tsp

Bird Cake

Categories: Birds and Recipes.

Many varieties of birds are returning to the garden for the winter. We feed the birds all year round but add some extra feeders in the winter. One of the feeders has bird cake in it.  You can buy suet block feeders in the stores and they vary in content and price.  I prefer to make my own. I do cheat a bit and buy one suet block from the store for the plastic mold.  I fill it about half way with regular bird seed and then add some extras like black oil sunflower seed, nyger seed, safflower seed and a
