Braided coathangers

These instructions were shared by SusieQ on a crafting bulletin board.

Take 2 strips of material (let's say black and white) -- approximately 3 yards long EACH -- (I go from fingertip to chin 3 times)

Find the middle of the two strips and put them together as if making a cross -- this is the centre that goes on the tip of the coathanger. Put the tip of the coat hanger in the centre of the "cross". You now have four strips of material -- 2 white, 2 black.

Hint: I put the coathanger between my knees when I do these.

Put the 2 strips of one colour (black)-- on one side of the hanger - let's say RIGHT side of the hanger and the white strips are on the LEFT side.
Now look at the strips and place them between two fingers on each hand.
Look for the one that is the furthest away from others -- let's say BLACK -- RIGHT SIDE -- it is the first one to go down underneath the wire, through the two WHITE strips on the left side, OVER the wire and becomes the bottom BLACK strip on the right side.
Now take the first WHITE strip -- LEFT SIDE -- go under the wire, through the 2 BLACK strips on the right side, over the wire -- that becomes the bottom WHITE strip on the left.
Go back to the top BLACK strip and go under the wire, through the 2 white strips, over the wire and this one becomes the new BOTTOM black strip.
Go to the top WHITE strip and do the same thing -- and then this one becomes the new bottom white strip.

Continue "braiding" until you come to the neck of the wire -- where the two pieces separate -- just continue to braid separately.

Hint: when coming to the rounded corners it is easier to push the material (braid) up onto a flat piece of wire, braid until you have enough to go around the corner and straighten out the braid.

When you get all the way around -- go up the neck of the coathanger for a few braids and then tie off.

Usually I sew the rest of the material into a flower.

You can print a pdf file of the pattern here.

I have now found a lady that sells the Nylotex or Phentex material. She is on Kijiji and if you search nylotex yarn you should find her too.

The above image was stolen by Kate Plourde and posted on a site (Craftown) as their own.  The image had my name removed by cutting off the bottom section and reposted to the site with her name underneath with the © symbol.  The site agreed to remove the image.  Thank you very much.  The person that took the image had no comment.  The image name has been changed in case anyone is hot linking to it.

If poeple would ask I would willing give approval to use my images (without any changes), but taking them, changing them and claiming them for themselves is against the law.

Magic Hangers
by shirleyt@craftsayings.com

Smooth for wrinkles you just traded
by using these hangers that are braided.
No more creases, no more crumples,
as magic hangers chase away rumples!

Thanks Shriley for writing this poem for me to use when I give these coathangers as gifts.
