Enjoying Daycations

We’ve been enjoying the summer weather and getting out and about.  For Five on Friday I’m sharing five of the fun places we have been to over the few months .

In May we had a day out in Ottawa to visit the tulip festival.  Ottawa is our favourite place to visit.  We love enjoying a treat from the bakery, a tour of the Byword market stores, a walk around Parliament Hill, and seeing the tulips at Dowes Lake.

One day we took a drive to the Unconventional mOOse in Tweed.   This is such a fun store to visit with all sorts of interesting things for sale.  If you are driving along Hwy 7 by Hwy 37 be sure and stop for a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

A bit further along Hwy 7 is another fascinating store called the Black River Trading Centre.  If you are looking for pots of all shapes and sizes you need to visit there.

We love to visit Niagara Falls and take in all the sights.  It was a really hot day in June when we went this year and luckily there was a nice breeze and the mist from the falls to cool us down a little bit.  There are two boat trips to take to go up close to the Falls, the Hornblower from the Canadian side and the Maid of the Mist from the American side.  Up until a few years ago the Maid of the Mist stopped on both sides but the docking rights changed.  In 1997 the Maid of the Mist VII was being built just outside of Belleville, Ontario and I accompanied a class trip to see the progress.

We had a fantastic Saturday watching the dragon boat races.  Our daughter’s fitness club had a team participating. After 5 races I’m sure they were all exhausted. Well done to everyone!  After the competition the last race was a fun race and no paddles could be used, just their hands.

We’ve also been visiting the smaller communities around us (Wooler, Picton, Stirling, Madoc and more) as it is always nice to browse in different independent stores instead of the chain stores that the big malls have.  It is also lovely to take a picnic lunch and stop by one of the many lakes near us and just sit peacefully by the waters edge and watch the wildlife.  We also like to do back road driving around the country side and check out the many road side stands for fresh veggies.

We have had some very hot and humid days lately and haven’t been too far this past week.  Sometimes you just have to stay inside in the cool in the afternoons and then it is time to read, do puzzles or craft.

I’m sharing with Five on Friday.
