Upside Down Tomatoes

At first the tomato plant will naturally try to grow upwards, but as you can see it eventually will hang down.

I tried growing an upside down tomato in a large bucket.  First you need to make a hole in the bottom of the bucket for the plant.

Put the tomato plant in through the hole and gradually fill with dirt from the top.  An extra pair of hands is helpful at this stage.

You also need a place to hang your bucket - somewhere that will give your plant ample room to grow downwards and a place that is sturdy enough to support the container.  The place I had was not high enough from the ground.  Bucket tomatoes require lots of water.

It was a fun experiment to do and would be great for the gardener that doesn't have a lot of space. I did get lots of 'tiny tim' tomatoes over the growing season.

I've heard these referred to as down under pots or inverted pots.
