Chives
Chives The German word for Chives is Schnittlauch, which means "cuttable leek." Chives grow in clumps, with round, hollow, grass-like leaves reaching a height of about 20cm. The flowers bloom for two months from late spring to midsummer. Remove the flower heads to maintain a constant supply of flavorful leaves. The easiest way to start chives is to dig a clump from an established patch to transplant into your garden. They are also easy to start from seeds. Plant them directly in the garden as early in spring as the soil can be worked. Chives are best used fresh and are a common addition to baked potatoes, cream soups, cheese soufflés, salads, soups, cream cheese sandwiches and egg dishes. There is some evidence that chives can improve digestion and reduce high blood pressure.
Garlic chives - pretty white flowers towards the end of summer. These are sometimes called Chinese chives. Printble seed label for garlic chives that can be attached to small mini ziplock bags.
