Dahlias
I recently started growing dahlias in my garden. Dahlias are tuberous perennials that are originally from Mexico where they are the national flower. In my area (zone 5b Cdn) they need to be dug each year. After digging be sure to dry out the tuber so that excess dirt can be shaken off. Remove all feeder roots and stems. Look for new "eyes" that will develop. These are the indications of new shoots for the following year. You can divide these but this is something I haven't tried yet. I'm still a novice as far as over wintering dahlia tubers. Tubers need to be stored in a cool, dark, frost free place. Covering them with peat moss or vermiculite is a good idea and keeps a certain amount of moisture in the tubers.
Lots of winter reading and seaching on the internet will help me learn the techniques of doing this. For now I will be happy to buy a few new dahlia roots next spring from my local garden center.
