Daylilies - Hemerocallis

Lilies and daylilies are a gorgeous addition to your garden. The botanical name, Hemerocallis, means "beauty for a day". Each individual flower lasts only a day, hence the common name daylily. The flower stems, or scapes, will each produce several blooms.

Daylily plants are different from asiatic or oriental lilies.   The leaves are all in a clump and the blooms form on tall, leafless flowering spikes.

Varieties of daylilies will bloom from spring right through to the end of summer.  The plants prefer full sun and will tolerate most soils  The plants are easy to grow and only need dividing about every 10 years.

Asiatic or orinetal lilies form tall stems with the leaves coming off the stem and the flowers at the top of the stem.

You do need to watch out for a red lily beetle infestation on the asiatic and oriental lilies.   It is bright red with black legs and head and about 8 cm. long. An adult beetle will over winter in the soil or plant debris and emerge hungry ready to eat your plants.  The larvae will eat the leaves and destroy the plant quickly.

Hand picking them and dropping into a contianer of water with some oil in it will get rid of them.  But you have to do this on a daily basis.  I used Sevin dusting powder this year and was able to keep them under control.  I know many gardeners have given up growing asistic and oriental lilies because of this beetle.

If you have this beetle in your garden and have an effective way of getting rid of them, please add your suggestion to the guestbook.
