Cone Flower - Echinacea

purple coneflower - echinacea purpurea

This has to be one of my favourite perennials - with the drooping petals and dark cone shaped center.  The stems can be very tall and the blooms are long lasting.  The plant grows well in hot, dry conditions and will tolerate poor soil.  The botanical name echinacea comes from the Greek word echinos, which means hedgehog.   This refers to the prickly scales at the base of the flowers.

Echinacea has many herbal uses and is used to combat the common cold

Long, lasting blooms of white are a wonderful addition to the garden.

Start seeds indoors in March.  Germination can be up to a month.  Sow outdoors in early spring, after danger of last frost.  I also sprinkly seeds around the main plant in the Fall and let Nature take over.  In the spring there are new plants growing.
