Liatris or Gayfeather

Liatris is a gorgeous perennial plant with tall, spikey plumes.  The plant prefers full sun and easily grows in most types of soil, especailly well drained soil.  This plant attracts butterflies and is deer resistant.  Clumps may be divided every 3 or 4 years in the spring.  Liatris belongs to the aster family.  The spikes are made up a lots of small flowers that open from the top down.

One day I was fortunate enough to snap a photo of a clear wing hummingbird moth on the liatris.  You have to look very carefully to see the wings.  It is easily mistaken for a hummingbird as it flits from flower to flower.

Seedpod & seeds - liatris

Seeds need a cool period before germination, which can take 20 to 45 days.  New plants grown from seed will not flower until the second year.

Most people prefer to propogate liatris by dividing clumps or purchasing bulbs from garden centers in the spring.

Print a seed packet for liatris seeds.
