Sedum Sedum is a large genus representing about 400 varieties. I love Autumn Joy sedum and have lots in the garden. Be early September it is in bloom. It is an upright perennial plant with umbrella like flower heads. At first the flowers are green and they gradually turn to various shades of pinks and reds. It prefers full sun, but will tolerate some shade. It is quite drought tolerant and will grow well in those dry areas of the garden. The clumps will get larger and you can divide them to get more plants. You can also take cuttings from the plant, dip in rooting compound and pot up. Within a few weeks roots should develop and you will have new plants.
In the Autumn it is time to start putting the garden to bed before winter sets in. In a way it is a sad time in the garden ... time for the ornaments to be stored away, time for the chairs to be put into the garage, time to cut down the plants. I don't cut them all down, but leave some of interest during the winter. I also try to leave some seed heads on the plants for those hungry birds that visit the winter garden. It is time to get the pots filled with winter greenery. I love the colours of the sedum in Autumn. Thoughts, sayings about Autumn
