Solomon Seal - Polygonatum biflorum
This perennial
plant is a relative of lily of the valley. It prefers a shady
location with light soil. It spreads by creeping roots
underground. The stems can be from 45 to 60 cm. long and tend
to arch. In late May and June the flowers grow in small
clusters along the stem and are followed by small berries. Mine
grows well in a north facing garden and is very low maintenance.
In late fall the stems die away and fall off completely. In
spring all new stems will grow. The roots were used by settlers
for medicinal purposes such as lung problems, digestive problems,
sores and skin injuries.
