The 12 Birding Days of Christmas

Categories: Birds and Christmas.

~ The camera is always on hand to capture the feathered lens friends in the garden, down by the bay or driving along.  Christmas carols are being played everywhere now and just to shake things up a little bit I’m sharing some of favourite photos of birds with my rendition of the 12 birding days of Christmas.  Singing along or humming along is allowed. On the first day of birding my camera snapped for me … a cardinal in a bare tree and then continuing on … On the second day of birding my camera snapped for me 2 swans

The Christmas Five – Beads and Buttons

Categories: Christmas.

December is here and we are getting closer and closer to the holiday season.  Have you started decorating yet?  Here are some of my favourite things made with buttons and beads. These homemade ornaments will add sparkle and glitter to your decorating.  I started with sparkly ornaments and covered them with pearls and beads.  Hang them by the lights on your tree and they will glitter and sparkle. I had lots of fun making these button trees after finding them at a craft sale a couple of years ago.  These are about 5 cm or 2 in. tall. This cute little beaded

The Button Wreath

Categories: Christmas.

The button box holds an assortment of buttons in all sizes and colours.  But sometimes there just isn’t enough of the colour you want to make a craft, so it was off to the dollar store where they sell bags of buttons in various colours. The button wreath has been swirling around in my mind for ages and a post by Deb at Manitoba Gardens spurred me on to create this project. A layer of batting was added to the cardboard circle and then the whole thing was wrapped in white ribbon.  Around the outside a strip of lace was glued on. My wreath is about

The Christmas Five – Snowfolks & Snowflakes

Categories: Christmas.

It’s time for another Christmas Five, a collection of different Christmas crafts that I’ve made over the years.  This week it’s about snow.  Snowfolk and snowflakes.  The links will take you back to the original posts. The snowman hat makes a cute table centrepiece or display item.  It is easily make from a large can, some cardboard, some spray paint and ribbon to decorate. Pep and Salty were made from dollar store salt and pepper shakers.  They were so much fun to make I then added Sprinkle and Shaker The yarn and button man was made from some odd balls of white yarn, a wooden

The Christmas Five – Trees

Categories: Christmas.

Over the years I’ve added all sorts of Christmas crafts and decorating ideas to my site.  I’ve started the Christmas 5 and will be grouping some together crafts and sharing them again, usually on a Friday. The first is a nice simple stitching project using green yarn, plastic canvas and sequins.  Using 7 count plastic canvas cut a piece 17 holes by 26 holes and then cut out the pattern below.  Stitch the base in brown or all green as I did, and stitch the star in gold, and the remainder of the tree in green.  The sequins give it a sparkly

The Christmas Five – Nuts and Pinecones

Categories: Christmas and Nature Crafts.

We are into November and the days are getting chillier and shorter so it is time to get into crafting mode.  Over the years I’ve added all sorts of Christmas crafts and decorating ideas to my site.   I’ll be grouping some together and sharing them again. Last week were craf-tea ideas.  Nuts and pinecones are the theme for this week. The first is a pinecone and candle centre piece.  The base is a wicker plate with a candle in the middle and decorated with pinecones and small ornaments.  Small pieces of greenery are added to give a bit of

The Christmas Five – Craf-tea

Categories: Christmas and Craf-tea.

Dare I mention that the Christmas season is fast approaching, and now is the time to get a head start on gift making?  These craf-tea ideas for gifts  are all simple to make and can be personalized for any occasion. The teapot hand towel or tea towel was one of my favourite little projects to make.  I’ve used different motifs from teapots, to rabbits, to Hallowe’en ghosts. Why not tuck a tea card inside a greeting card.  Add a favourite tea, mine is Stash, or a festive tea bag inside.  It’s a lovely way to let a friend know you are thinking

Festive Tea Bags

Categories: Christmas and Craf-tea.

Cookie cutters aren’t just for making cookies.  I used them as a template to make festive tea bags.  These little gifts can be tucked inside a greeting card to send a cup of cheer to the recipient. You need the flat coffee filters that can be bought at dollar stores, some of your favourite loose tea, cookie cutters for templates and your sewing machine.  Be sure the cookie cutters are medium sized ones.  If they are too small, as the tree one in the picture was, it makes it difficult to get the tea inside.  I ended up folding the filter and cutting

Everything is ‘Tree’mendous

Categories: Christmas.

It’s that time of year when the house is looking ‘tree’mendous. I love trees, lots of them, perhaps because it gives the illusion of outside throughout the house. It’s time for Five on Friday and I’m sharing 5 different trees that I have for decorating inside and outside the house. Enjoying the pleasures that the backyard birds bring to our days, I created my own inside bird tree last year and have the tree up again this year.  We don’t have a huge entry hall, in fact it feels so much smaller when more than 2 people arrive at the
