Heron Spotted Down by the Bay

On a walk down by the bay at the beginning of the week we saw lots of mallard ducks, many gulls, a lot of cormorants, a great blue heron and a juvenile night heron.  I’m really hoping my ID is right on this one. The first time we spotted a black crowned night heron by the bay was in 2011.  These ones are different to the great blue herons we usually see … necks and legs are shorter. Black Crowned Night Heron

I was extremely lucky to capture some photos of the black crowned night heron, or night heron, on September 7, 2011.   My husband had spotted this water bird down by the bay on September 6 but didn’t have a camera with him.  My mission the next morning was to go back with my camera to see if I could capture a new lens friend.  I spotted him just sitting there quite close to shore.
