It is lovely and sunny today but the wind is very strong and cold. We had some snow this morning and at times it was like being in a snow globe. The wind was blowing the snow around and around. It’s the perfect day to stay inside. November is coming to an end and winter is still making an appearance even though there is a month to go before it officially starts.
I recently made another batch of the all season suet I use. This time I used cardboard tubes cut about 6 cm or 2.5 inches high and filled each one before freezing. Then it is just a matter of peeling away the cardboard as these little tubes of suet fit nicely into the coil feeder.
The bluejays love this feeder and it doesn’t take them long to arrived after it has been filled and put outside. If you haven’t made the all season suet, you must give it a try, as the birds will flock to it.
The peanut feeder is visited by woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches and even the sparrows will chick it out from time to time.
The red bellied woodpecker has been visiting the peanut feeder. We saw him before the first storm a few days ago, and he has been back since.
The stumps of wood with their faces, known as the Stumpy Family, have been covered in snow from that first storm.

Enjoy watching the woodpecker as he eats the peanuts.
I’ve also been doing some reading, some knitting, some crochet and drinking cups of warm tea.
What do you do when it is too cold and snowy to go outside?

I tried to make some several years ago but had a terrible time with flies and gnats at the feeder. I’m thinking the kind of frozen suet I got at the store made the difference. What do you think? – Margy

I always freeze my homemade suet, that way I can make a few batches at once and use as needed. It works great when frozen.

I bet the birds enjoy the efforts you put into making those lovely suet’s for them . Lovely photos. I buy our suets from our birding store a box of 12 different flavours of winter suets is about $10 and I put them in the freezer as well and the birdies here just love them . I tryed peanuts but the squirrels are a nuisance here with them so I dont put any out but the birdies have plenty of other goodies . When it is cold out I like to dabble on my computer learning photography tips and tricks and processing of photos through programs , I also read the odd book watch my birds from my windows and yes drink lots of cups of tea YUMMY ! Miggs and I still brave the cold every now and then each week and go for our walks and have the odd play in the yard . Thanks for sharing , Have a good weekend !

Once I made my own suet thebirds weren’t as interested in the store bought kind. I make up a few batches at a time and keep it in the freezer.

I also like to cozy up indoors with copious amounts of tea at this time of year.

That time of year again, actually you are right Linda Mother Nature is confused starting winter fridget temps and lots of snow, can’t say I am impressed. I know the birds are very happy at your place Linda.

We sure do spoil the birds Myrt and the give us lots of pleasure back.

That is brilliant! The cardboard would make excellent kindling after that!

What a good idea, reusing at its best. We don’t have a wood burning stove anymore 🙁. Used to really enjoy the heat it gave off.
