‘Soup’er Recipe – Wild Rice and Barley soup

posted in: 'Soup'er Recipes | 6

I’m always looking for ways to make home made gifts and this year I’ve put together gifts in a jar.

I’m sharing the wild rice and barley soup mix today.

I used the idea of the upcycled playing cards and created some tags with the cooking directions on the reverse side.

I went with food related words on the front and the cooking directions on the back.

Layer these ingredients in the jar.

  • 1/2 cup medium pearl barley
  • 1/3 cup dried vegetable flakes
  • 1/2 cup uncooked wild rice

Mix these dry ingredients together and add as the next layer.

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried minced garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Mix these together for the next layer.

  • 3 tablespoons chicken bouillon granules
  • 1/2 cup dried minced onion

I used a jar from Classico sauce, thoroughly cleaned and dried. There was a bit of space left at the top so I crunched up some waxed paper to fill the space. This is so the ingredients don’t move around and mix together.

I cut circles of material with my pinking shears by tracing a luncheon plate on some pretty material. Once the lid was firmly in place, the material was held in place with an elastic and then raffia was used to tie on the tag and make a bow.

On the back of the tag I added the cooking instructions. The recipe came from this site.

Besides the wild rice and barley soup mix I also made bean soup in a jar and oatmeal in a jar.
